I'LL NEVER GROW UP

Robbie, my nine-year-old grandson, recently asked his mother about puberty. She explained that it occurs when children's bodies begin to change. "Boys," she said, "grow taller and develop muscles. Their voices deepen, and they start to grow hair, like facial hair." She paused. "Do you understand?"

"Yes," he replied. "I just hope it happens on a Saturday, when I'm not in school."

DATO' SRI TONY FERNANDES

When the company was still relatively small, Fernandes used to try his hand working in the different departments. He was a bag carrier, check in officer and even flight attendant for a day. It allowed him to get on the ground and see real problems and needs. It also gave him the chance to spot potential stars in the company. When he learned that some bag carries dreamt of becoming pilots, he sponsored their training. He's proud of the facts that "18 months later they are flying planes." AirAsia also boasts of having 35 female pilots in their staff. "If women can run a country, they can certainly fly a plane!" he exclaims.

Fernandes ends his well-applauded speech by encouraging the summit delegates with his credo: "Believe the unbelievable. Dream the impossible. Never take 'No' for an answer!"

Apa itu TRUST?

WHAT IS TRUST?

Consultant Psychologist Paul Jambunathan says:" In psychology, trust is a very complex behaviour where we allow ourselves to be subjected to another. It's something we call mutuality when people realise that they are interdependent. Trust needs to run both ways to exist. If only one party trusts, the other can manipulate the trusting party. The higher the trust factor between people, the more efficient and solid the relationship."

The 10 Most Trusted Professions

As expected, the most trusted professions were mostly science and medicine oriented. One interesting finding is that CEOs, at number 27, have lower rankings than musicians (#21), tour guides (#23) and stewardessess (#26). Perhaps it's time for corporate leaders to sit up and listen?

Kids' perceptions - LOVE

Here's how kids see love in action:

  • Love is when my mummy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK. Danny, 7

  • Love is when Mummy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says that he is handsomer than Robert Redfort. Chris, 7

  • Love is when Mummy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken. Elaine, 5

  • Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk some more. Emily, 8

Praise Therapy

After suffering a brain aneurysm, I spent a month in hospital recovering, then a further month in a rehabilitation hospital to have daily therapy.

Each day involved attending and participating in three or four sessions. Always fatigued and often suffering from headaches, I lived for nights when I could go to bed and stay there.

Given that I was unable to find the therapy rooms on my own - or even tell the time - my therapy was an ongoing trial. I often wondered if I would ever competent enough to go home and lead a normal life.

One evening, a nurse called in to see me before she went off duty. "I just wanted to let you know how well you're doing. It was important to tell you that," she said.

Her encouraging words overwhelmed me. After her comment, I knew I was winning the battle. I'm sure she would never know how much impact her gesture had.

Fix It With Food:
Knee Pain

Millions of people have stiff, painful knees thanks to osteoarthritis. Remedies range from keeping active and dropping excess weight to steroid injections and even surgery. But research shows that you can take a tastier route to improvement:

SOY People with knee pain reported less discomfort and used fewer pain meds after eating soy protein daily for three months, according to Oklahoma State University research. Soy is rich in isoflavones, plant hormones with anti-inflammatory properties. Study participants consumed a powdered soy drink mix that contains 40 grams of protein, but, says study author Bahram H. Arjmandi, PhD, you can get the same benefit from sources like flavoured soy milk, edamame (baby soybeans), and soy burgers.

CITRUS In a study of 293 Australian adults, eating plenty of fruit reduced the risk of developing bone marrow lesions - a marker for worsening knee osteoarthritis and pain. The knee-friendliest fruits appear to be vitamin C-packed ones, like kiwi, orange, mango, grapefruit, and papaya. The researchers suspect it's the vitamin C in fruit that protects the knee joint and supporting structures.

FISH Many studies have found that fish and fish oil ease the joint pain and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis. Now a study shows that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may block not only the chemicals that cause inflammation in osteoarthritis but also the proteins known to wear down knee cartilage. Eat two servings of oily fish (such as mackerel or salmon) weekly or take one gram of omega-3s in capsule form every day, says nutrition researcher Dr Artemis P. Simopoulos.
